Driver and Machine It is widely said that a driver who is one with their car looks like their car, others nickname their car as an indication of how they feel about their car. There are those who prefer to do otherwise or see their car as a medium of going from A to B. “Petrolheads” can be a broad term, only those who understand the term know its true meaning. Being a petrolhead is also a culture, a lifestyle, that 6th sense in knowing what type of car has just sped past your house without even catching a site to it, its that 6th sense that arises to develop a telepathy with your car, it is very emotional to a certain kind of a feeling. When your car is not well, you feel unwell too. This is my BMW 130i, the last of the non-M naturally aspirated straight 6 engine from BMW, coming out of the factory with a quoted 195kw naturally aspirated engine packed a punch in its release days. BMW is very well known for their reliability of their naturally aspirated straight six engines that produce the most raw and unique exhaust notes in the game. This was a big factor to me as I wanted a very reliable BMW straight 6 that has a tonker of an engine at my set cost. Very underrated is the M-sport suspension not forgetting the signature rear wheel BMW camber. In an instant you realise why rear wheel BMW’s give drivers such good confidence around curves. The suspension is very stiff for daily driving but petrolheads understand and become accustomed to it, they know the reason and the benefits far outweigh the cons. It is for a reason motor journalists still recommend the BMW 130i as one of the standouts for a good budget purchase performance hatchback these days. Take good care of your machine, love it, maintain it, keep it safe and it will do the same to you.

MSP origins A mutual love of a brand brought a group of likeminded individuals together. We all joined the same car club and as always; like finds like. Rebels seek each other out. A subculture started forming amongst those of us whose mouths are louder than our exhaust tones. While we were happy to find each other, this box was not one that we could fit in, for whatever reasons, and we weren’t willing to change. Instead of trying to change an existing structure, a core broke away to create a place where we did belong. Where others, like us, could belong. MSP is born. That name has its own origin story and it’s a typically Capetonian. The group is based on principles as opposed to rules. Community as opposed membership. The foundation is humour. A group where you can speak freely, unwind and laugh. There is an ingrained comfort where members take the piss out of each other without risk of offense. That is perhaps one of the few criteria for affiliation, a sense of humour. We can’t call ourselves MSP and not have a sense of humour. Another principle is respect. For each other, other road users and the greater community. Despite the fact most of us drive BMW’s, believe it or not, we all know how to use our indicators. If that doesn’t convince you then I don’t know what will. For clarity sake, that does mean that if you ever join us on the road, there will be no doughnuts unless you’re eating them, or similar shenanigans. We all love that shit but said greater community might not want to hear your tyres screaming for mercy or your exhaust popping and banging. There is time and place for everything. Our demographic is made up of a wide cross section of the community; entrepreneurs, professionals, blue collar, suits and everything in between. There is no elitism, just don’t be smet. Kidding, you can be smet if that’s you being true to you. You don’t need an M class. Everyone with a love of motorsport is welcome, except Mach 1’s. Oh, and if your car is stanced…. Tsek! The rest of the group may disagree with me on that, but there… I said it. Join the next run or event with your GTi (lord help us), GTR, E30, VTec, RX-7, WRX, AMG, RS and, and, and you get the idea. Its early days for us. We’ve only had our first run on the 02/02/2020 and the turn out was great. Over 30 Bavarian beasts in attendance. We followed that up with a social braai for people to get to know each other. The interest is growing. The following is growing. Come along for the ride. P.S. If anything above offended you like the GTi, Mach 1, stance, foul language and smet comments, then you should know that this isn’t the box for you. Those were jokes. That was a test and you failed. You are the weakest link. Goodbye.
